The reaction of 2-octanol with phthalic anhydride produces di-2-octanol phthalate, which is a commonly used plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride and is also used in synthetic fiber oils and defoamers. It is used to synthesize surfactants, coal mine flotation agents, and pesticide emulsifiers. It is used as a solvent, such as a solvent for oils and waxes. As a pharmaceutical raw material, it is used to synthesize the anthelmintic drug hexadecene.
